DEFINITION:
The PNE or Percutaneous Nerve Evaluation is a diagnostic test that will tell us if there is an underlying nerve issue that is causing a miscommunication of the signals that the bladder sends to the brain to be processed.
 
REASON FOR PROCEDURE:
  • Frequent urination resulting from an overactive nerve signal telling the brain the bladder is full when it is not.  
  • Leakage of urine often accompanied by a strong sense of urgency resulting from the bladder automatically emptying without warning.
  • The inability to empty completely sometimes resulting in the use of a catheter.
 
RISKS:
  • None expected.
  • Rare occurrence of infection.
 
DESCRIPTION OF PROCEDURE:
  • The PNE consists of placing a hair thin wire next to the nerves controlling the bladder. These nerves are located about 3 inches from the tail bone and are easily accessible.
  • This test is performed in the office or surgery center and only requires local anesthetic.
  • An energy source is connected to the other end which provides gentle stimulation to these nerves.
  • The procedure usually takes 30 minutes.
 
EXPECTED OUTCOME:
  • When the evaluation is successful, patients will notice improvements in their bladder symptoms which are usually dramatic.
  • After 3 days of testing, the tiny wires are removed in the office.
  • The evaluation is completely reversible and non-destructive to the nerves.
 
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS:
  • Movement of the temporary wire.
  • Technical problems.
  • Temporary pain at the site.
 
POST PROCEDURE CARE
GENERAL MEASURES:
  • Sponge bath.
  • Continue to wear pads/Depends.
 
MEDICATION:
  • You may use nonprescription drugs, such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID’S), for minor pain after the procedure.
 
ACTIVITY & DIET:
  • Maintain a low activity level.
  • No bending or twisting at the waist or lifting anything over 5 pounds.
  • Keep your fluid intake normal.
